The Bahraini Dinar is issued by the Central Bank of Bahrain and is one of the world's highest-valued currencies, pegged to the US Dollar at a fixed rate of 1 BHD = 2.6596 USD since 2001. Like other USD-pegged Gulf currencies, INR/BHD tracks INR/USD movement, typically in a βΉ220ββΉ230 range through 2024β2025. Notes circulate in BHD Β½, 1, 5, 10 and 20 denominations, each divided into 1,000 fils. The current fourth issue, introduced in 2008, carries Bahraini cultural and architectural themes including the Bab al-Bahrain gate, traditional dhows and the Bahrain World Trade Center. Earlier third issue notes remain legal tender but are increasingly rare.

Everything you need to know about buying and selling Bahraini Dinar in Chennai
For purchases up to the equivalent of USD 3,000, a valid photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, or Passport) is sufficient. For amounts above USD 3,000 or for outward remittance purposes, you will also need your Passport, valid visa, and confirmed air ticket. PAN Card is required for all transactions above INR 50,000 as per RBI guidelines.
Bahrain has strong card and digital-payment infrastructure β particularly in the financial district, malls (City Centre Bahrain, Seef Mall) and major restaurants. But the souqs (Manama Souq, Muharraq), traditional sites like Bab al-Bahrain, smaller taxis and the older parts of Manama still prefer cash. A practical float of BHD 50β80 in mostly BHD 1s and BHD 5s covers daily spending; one BHD 20 covers a hotel deposit. Pair cash with a forex card or international debit card.
Yes β the BHD Β½ note is fully legal tender and circulates widely in Bahrain alongside the BHD 1. We stock both. For smaller spending like taxis or quick coffee purchases, the BHD Β½ is the right denomination β much more useful than carrying excess BHD 1s. Tell us your trip plans and we'll include a few BHD Β½ notes in your mix.
We accept all current legal-tender BHD issues, including the older third issue notes from the 1990s and early 2000s. They're rare today but still valid. If you have any very old issues from before the BHD revaluation (pre-1973 Gulf Rupee notes, for example), those cannot be exchanged commercially β only the Central Bank of Bahrain might honour them. Bring whatever current-issue BHD you have left from your trip and we'll exchange it at our standing rate.
