The Saudi Riyal is issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) and, like the UAE Dirham, is pegged to the US Dollar β at a fixed rate of 3.75 SAR/USD since 1986. This peg means INR/SAR tracks INR/USD almost exactly, typically in a βΉ21.50ββΉ22.50 band through 2024β2025. Notes circulate in SAR 5, 10, 50, 100, 200 and 500 denominations. The current series carries portraits of King Salman bin Abdulaziz (2016β2020 issues) and King Abdullah on the older but still-valid sixth series. SAMA introduced a commemorative G20 SAR 200 note in 2020 which remains legal tender. We strongly recommend smaller denominations for Hajj and Umrah travellers β the AED 500 equivalent is unwieldy for daily use in Makkah.

Who Needs Saudi Riyal in Chennai?
Saudi Arabia is one of our most operationally specialised currency desks because of the pilgrimage calendar. Hajj travellers (departing typically MayβJune each year depending on the Islamic calendar) require SAR 3,000β6,000 in mostly SAR 50 and SAR 100 notes β Hajj operators in Chennai such as Al-Hind Tours, Madina Tours and others routinely send their cohorts to us for the standard pilgrim kit. Umrah travellers go year-round and usually need SAR 1,500β3,000 for the shorter trip. NRI workers in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and the Eastern Province typically buy SAR 1,500β2,500 to bridge return-to-post salary cycles, particularly in healthcare, oil services and hospitality. Business visitors and ARAMCO contractors usually pair SAR cash with a forex card for ground transport and incidentals.
SAR Exchange FAQs
Everything you need to know about buying and selling Saudi Riyal in Chennai
For purchases up to the equivalent of USD 3,000, a valid photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, or Passport) is sufficient. For amounts above USD 3,000 or for outward remittance purposes, you will also need your Passport, valid visa, and confirmed air ticket. PAN Card is required for all transactions above INR 50,000 as per RBI guidelines.
For most pilgrims we recommend a mix weighted toward SAR 50 and SAR 100 notes, with some SAR 10 and SAR 5 for taxis, water vendors and small purchases around Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi. SAR 500 notes are hard to break in the pilgrim economy β many small Makkah shops won't accept them. A typical Hajj float is roughly 50% in SAR 100s, 30% in SAR 50s, and 20% in smaller denominations. Tell us your travel dates and we'll structure the right mix.
Because the Saudi Riyal is pegged to the US Dollar, there is no benefit to timing SAR specifically β your effective rate depends on INR/USD movement, not SAR fluctuation. If you expect INR to weaken against USD over the months before your trip, buying earlier is cheaper; if you expect INR to strengthen, waiting helps. Most pilgrims buy 2β3 weeks before departure to lock in current rates and to allow time for denomination requests. We can hold pre-confirmed quotes for shorter windows on request.
Yes β both are legal tender. The 2020 commemorative SAR 200 issued for Saudi Arabia's G20 presidency, and the older sixth-series notes carrying King Abdullah's portrait, remain valid alongside the current King Salman series. SAMA has not demonetised any of these designs. Saudi retailers and banks accept all of them. If you receive a mix on sell-back from your trip, bring everything β we exchange all current designs at the same buy rate.
