Wire transfers to UK bank accounts via SWIFT typically arrive in 1 to 3 business days. Most transfers reach major UK banks like Barclays, HSBC, NatWest, and Lloyds without delays.
Sort Code and Account Number
UK domestic transfers use a 6-digit Sort Code and an 8-digit account number. For international wire transfers, you will also need the bank's SWIFT/BIC code. Confirm these with your recipient before visiting us.

LRS allows resident Indians to remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year for permitted purposes. GBP transfers to the UK count toward this limit.

Common Questions
What bank details do I need to send money to a UK account?
For international wire transfers to the UK, you need the recipient's full name, their 8-digit account number, their 6-digit Sort Code, and the bank's SWIFT/BIC code. Some UK banks also provide an IBAN (which starts with 'GB'). Having the IBAN is helpful and speeds up processing. For university tuition payments, you will also need the payment reference number that the university provides on their invoice.
How long does a SWIFT transfer to the UK take?
Most SWIFT transfers from India to UK bank accounts are credited within 1 to 3 business days. Transfers to well-connected banks like HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds, or NatWest tend to arrive faster. Transfers on Fridays or before UK bank holidays may take slightly longer. For tuition fee payments, initiate at least 3 to 5 working days before the deadline.
How much can I send to the UK per year under LRS?
Under RBI's LRS, a resident Indian can remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year (April to March). This applies across all purposes and destinations combined, not separately for each country. For a student in the UK needing tuition and living expenses over the year, it is common to make multiple transfers that together stay within this limit.
What documents are needed for sending university tuition to the UK?
You need your passport, PAN card, Form A2 (we fill this together), the university CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) letter or official offer letter, and the university's fee invoice clearly showing the amount due in GBP. If the payment is to a university bank account rather than directly to a student's account, we will also need the university's SWIFT code and payment reference.
Is TCS applicable on GBP transfers to the UK for education?
From April 2026, TCS of 2% applies on education remittances above Rs. 10 lakh per financial year sent directly to a recognised foreign educational institution. If the transfer is to a student's personal UK bank account (not directly to the university), a higher TCS rate of 5% applies above the Rs. 10 lakh threshold. TCS is not a final tax. It appears in your Form 26AS and can be claimed back or set off against your tax liability when filing returns.
Can I send money to the UK for living expenses, not just tuition?
Yes. LRS permits remittances for maintenance of close relatives abroad. A student's living expenses in the UK, covering rent, food, transport, and other costs, can be sent as a maintenance remittance. The documentation is simpler here. You need your passport, PAN, Form A2, and a self-declaration confirming that the recipient is a close relative (child, spouse, sibling, parent).
