The Pound Sterling is issued by the Bank of England and is one of the world's most-traded currencies. Notes circulate in £5, £10, £20 and £50 denominations, all polymer since 2021, replacing the old paper notes which are no longer legal tender. The current Bank of England series carries the portrait of King Charles III (issued from mid-2024) alongside the still-circulating Queen Elizabeth II polymer notes; both are valid. Note that Scottish notes from Royal Bank of Scotland or Clydesdale Bank, and Northern Irish notes from Ulster Bank, are widely accepted within the UK but harder to convert back into INR in India, so we recommend asking for England-issued notes when possible. INR/GBP has typically ranged ₹105-₹110 through 2024-2025.

Who Needs British Pound in Chennai?
Chennai's traffic to the UK is dominated by two student cohorts: undergraduate and Master's students heading to UK universities in the September intake (large cohorts at Imperial, UCL, Manchester, Edinburgh, Warwick, Cardiff) and one-year postgraduate diploma students. These travellers typically buy £2,500-£4,000 for tuition deposits, first-month accommodation top-ups and initial living costs. Healthcare professionals, particularly NHS-bound doctors and nurses qualifying through OET/IELTS, are a growing segment, usually buying £1,500-£3,000 to bridge the relocation period. Family visitors to relatives in London/Birmingham/Leicester and short-trip tourists doing the London-Edinburgh-Cardiff loop typically need £1,000-£2,000 in mixed £10/£20 notes for daily spend.

No. The Bank of England fully withdrew paper £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes by September 2022. We only stock and accept the current polymer series. If you have old paper notes from a pre-2022 trip, you can no longer spend them in the UK, but you may be able to deposit them at a Bank of England counter in London if you ever return. We unfortunately cannot exchange them in Chennai.
Scottish notes (Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland, Clydesdale Bank) and Northern Irish notes (Bank of Ireland, Danske Bank, Ulster Bank, AIB) are legally distinct issues, but circulate freely alongside Bank of England notes across the UK. We recommend asking for Bank of England (England/Wales) notes from us for two reasons: they're easier to use in southern England, and they're easier to sell back in India if you have leftovers. Scottish/NI notes are sometimes refused by smaller English retailers and Indian forex shops.
Yes. Buying GBP in advance for a visa deposit, blocked-account funding, or tuition payment is fully permitted under RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme. You will need to present your university offer letter, valid passport and PAN. For amounts above USD 3,000-equivalent we also collect your visa appointment confirmation or CAS letter. If your visa is later refused, the currency is fully convertible back to INR. Bring it back to us with your refusal letter.
