The Bangladeshi Taka is issued by Bangladesh Bank. Notes circulate in ৳2, ৳5, ৳10, ৳20, ৳50, ৳100, ৳200, ৳500 and ৳1000 denominations. The current series features Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh, on every denomination. INR/BDT has typically traded around βΉ0.85ββΉ0.90 through 2024β2025 (so βΉ1 = roughly ৳1.10β৳1.15). The Bangladesh Bank introduced a commemorative ৳200 note in 2020 to mark Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's centenary, which remains in circulation alongside other denominations. Some older issues remain technically valid but the Bangladesh Bank gradually withdraws very old designs.

Everything you need to know about buying and selling Bangladeshi Taka in Chennai
For purchases up to the equivalent of USD 3,000, a valid photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, or Passport) is sufficient. For amounts above USD 3,000 or for outward remittance purposes, you will also need your Passport, valid visa, and confirmed air ticket. PAN Card is required for all transactions above INR 50,000 as per RBI guidelines.
Bangladesh Bank has gradually withdrawn very old issues, but most notes from 2011 onward remain legal tender. The current series (introduced around 2011 with the Sheikh Mujib portrait theme) circulates alongside the older issue from before that. If you have any notes more than 15+ years old, they may be refused at retail in Bangladesh β bring them and we'll advise on a case-by-case basis. We typically dispense the current series only.
Dhaka's better hotels, larger restaurants and shopping centres (Bashundhara City, Jamuna Future Park) accept Visa and Mastercard. But rickshaws, CNG (auto-rickshaws), street food, smaller restaurants, and most of the country outside Dhaka are cash-first. For RMG-sector business travellers we recommend BDT 30,000βBDT 50,000 cash plus a forex card. ATM availability is reasonable in Dhaka but worse in district towns.
Bangladesh Bank actively manages the BDT against the US Dollar (a 'crawling peg' approach with adjustments to defend reserves). Since INR also has actively-managed elements against USD, the INR/BDT cross rate tends to be more stable than truly free-floating currency pairs. That said, BDT depreciated noticeably during Bangladesh's 2023β2024 external balance pressures and may continue to adjust β we recommend checking today's rate with us for larger amounts.
