The Mexican Peso is issued by Banco de México. Notes circulate in MXN 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 denominations. The current 'Familia G' series, introduced 2018–2021, is one of the most colourful and design-forward note series globally, with each denomination dedicated to a particular Mexican biome (semi-desert, temperate forest, Mesoamerican rainforest) and historical theme. The polymer MXN 20 features Benito Juárez and Mexican coastal ecosystems. The MXN is one of the world's most-traded emerging-market currencies, with significant daily volume on global forex desks. INR/MXN typically trades around ₹0.55–₹0.60 through 2024–2025 (₹1 = roughly MXN 1.70).

Who Needs Mexican Peso in Chennai?
Mexico is a smaller but growing destination for Chennai travellers, largely segmented by trip type. Cancun and Riviera Maya beach tourists (often combined with US trips for IT professionals visiting both) typically need MXN 8,000–MXN 15,000 (roughly ₹35,000–₹65,000) for a one-week beach trip including cenote tours, Tulum, Chichen Itza day trips and resort incidentals. Cultural tourists doing Mexico City–Oaxaca–Puebla typically need MXN 8,000–MXN 12,000 for art-museum visits, food tours and Day-of-the-Dead season trips. Business travellers to Mexican manufacturing partners (especially in automotive — Guanajuato, Aguascalientes — and electronics) typically need MXN 5,000–MXN 10,000. Chennai's smaller Mexican-academic-exchange visitors usually need MXN 3,000–MXN 6,000.
MXN Exchange FAQs
Everything you need to know about buying and selling Mexican Peso in Chennai
For purchases up to the equivalent of USD 3,000, a valid photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, or Passport) is sufficient. For amounts above USD 3,000 or for outward remittance purposes, you will also need your Passport, valid visa, and confirmed air ticket. PAN Card is required for all transactions above INR 50,000 as per RBI guidelines.
Take MXN for daily spending. While USD is accepted at Cancun and Riviera Maya tourist businesses (with menus often dual-priced), you'll get poor in-store rates and change in MXN. For Mexico City, Oaxaca, San Miguel de Allende and most of the country outside resort zones, MXN is essential. Card acceptance is good in major cities; cash is needed for street food (tacos al pastor stalls, juice carts, smaller cafés), taxis outside resorts, and tipping. We recommend MXN 6,000–MXN 10,000 cash plus a forex card.
Polymer. The current MXN 20 note (introduced 2021 under the Familia G series) features Benito Juárez and uses polymer substrate — more durable in humid coastal Mexico conditions. The polymer MXN 20 has largely replaced the older paper version, though some older paper notes may still circulate. We dispense the current polymer issue.
Generally MXN for local-context tips (taxi drivers, hotel housekeeping, food-delivery), and either USD or MXN for tourism-industry workers (Riviera Maya tour guides, Cancun resort staff). Tipping culture is strong in tourist areas — 15–20% on restaurant bills, MXN 50–100 per bag for porters, USD 5–10 per day for housekeeping in resort hotels. We recommend a mix of MXN 50 and MXN 100 notes for tipping convenience, plus USD 5/USD 10 bills if you'll be in the Riviera Maya all-inclusive resort circuit.
