About Qatari Riyal Exchange at Scope Forex

Exchange Qatari Riyals (QAR) in Chennai seamlessly. We cater to expatriates and transit passengers flying through Doha.

The Qatari Riyal is issued by the Qatar Central Bank and is pegged to the US Dollar at a fixed rate of 3.64 QAR/USD since 1980. The peg means INR/QAR moves only as INR/USD moves, typically in a β‚Ή22.50–₹23.50 range through 2024–2025. Notes circulate in QAR 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 denominations. The current fifth-issue series (2020) features Qatar Vision 2030 themes β€” falcons, traditional dhows and modern Doha skyline β€” alongside the older fourth issue (2003), both fully legal tender. The fifth issue uses substantially upgraded security features including dynamic colour-shifting threads.

Who Needs Qatari Riyal in Chennai?

Qatar's mix of customers from Chennai is dominated by NRIs and aviation-related travellers. NRI workers β€” particularly in healthcare (Hamad Medical Corporation, Sidra), oil and gas (Qatargas, Qatar Energy), construction and hospitality β€” typically need QAR 500–1,200 for return-to-post bridging. Business travellers to Doha's growing tech and logistics sectors usually take QAR 400–800. Aviation transit passengers with long Doha layovers between Chennai and onward Europe/Africa connections often need just QAR 100–300 for premium lounge upgrades, hotel rooms (Al Maha service for Qatar Airways connection guests), and souq purchases. Family visits to relatives in West Bay, Al Wakrah and Doha city typically require QAR 300–600.

Everything you need to know about buying and selling Qatari Riyal in Chennai

For purchases up to the equivalent of USD 3,000, a valid photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, or Passport) is sufficient. For amounts above USD 3,000 or for outward remittance purposes, you will also need your Passport, valid visa, and confirmed air ticket. PAN Card is required for all transactions above INR 50,000 as per RBI guidelines.

For Qatar Airways transit passengers, often not β€” most airport amenities including premium lounges, the Al Maha service, hotel transit rooms and duty-free shops accept major credit cards and even Indian Rupees in some duty-free transactions. But for the Souq Waqif, taxis, smaller cafes and any independent transit hotels outside the airport, cash is preferred. A small QAR 100–200 float is plenty for most short-layover scenarios; we can prepare it walk-in.

Both are fully legal tender. The Qatar Central Bank has not demonetised the 2003 fourth-issue series, and you'll often receive a mix of fourth and fifth issue notes when buying QAR. All notes circulate freely in Qatar and exchange back to INR at the same rate from us. The fifth issue has stronger security features but is otherwise interchangeable.

QAR 500 notes are accepted everywhere in Qatar, but as with most high-value Gulf notes, they can be hard to break in smaller souq stalls and taxis. For most travellers we recommend a mix of QAR 100s and QAR 50s for daily spending, with one or two QAR 500s for hotel deposits or larger purchases. NRI workers returning with cash for monthly expenses sometimes prefer the QAR 500s for convenience of carrying β€” we can structure either way.
