About Canadian Dollar Exchange at Scope Forex

Exchange INR to Canadian Dollars (CAD) seamlessly in Chennai. We are the trusted choice for Canadian immigrants and international students.

The Canadian Dollar is issued by the Bank of Canada and is one of the major reserve currencies. Notes circulate in C$5, C$10, C$20, C$50 and C$100 β€” all polymer since 2013, when Canada completed its conversion from paper. The current Frontier series features Canadian figures like Sir John A. Macdonald and Viola Desmond; the previous Canadian Journey series (paper, 2001–2011) is no longer legal tender as of January 2021. INR/CAD has typically traded in a β‚Ή59–₹62 range through 2024–2025, generally tracking commodity-currency sentiment and US dollar strength.

Master's, PhD and college diploma students at University of Toronto, UBC, McGill, Waterloo, McMaster, Carleton and Conestoga typically buy C$4,000–C$8,000 for the first-month accommodation, GIC funding documentation (some need a portion in cash on arrival), and initial living costs. PR-track skilled-migration applicants (Express Entry, PNP) usually take C$3,500–C$6,000 for the settlement window. Family visits to relatives in Brampton, Mississauga, Scarborough and Surrey usually need C$2,000–C$3,000. Leisure tourists doing Toronto–Niagara–Montreal–Vancouver typically pair C$1,500–C$2,500 cash with a forex card.

Everything you need to know about buying and selling Canadian Dollar in Chennai

For purchases up to the equivalent of USD 3,000, a valid photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, or Passport) is sufficient. For amounts above USD 3,000 or for outward remittance purposes, you will also need your Passport, valid visa, and confirmed air ticket. PAN Card is required for all transactions above INR 50,000 as per RBI guidelines.

Unfortunately the Bank of Canada removed legal-tender status from older paper Canadian Journey series notes on 1 January 2021, including C$1, C$2, C$25, C$500 and C$1000 notes. Polymer notes from 2011 onward are the only legal-tender CAD. If you have old paper notes, you can no longer use them β€” and we cannot exchange them in Chennai. The Bank of Canada will still redeem them at face value if you visit a Canadian branch, but they cannot be used commercially.

Most universities recommend C$3,000–C$5,000 in cash plus a forex card for the first month. For International Student Direct Stream (SDS) applicants, the GIC portion is held by your Canadian bank (usually Scotiabank, ICICI Canada or CIBC) and is not part of your cash float. Cash covers the first-month rent (which often needs to be paid before your Canadian account activates), groceries, transit passes (TTC in Toronto, Compass in Vancouver) and SIM card setup.

Yes. Buying CAD for proof-of-funds, GIC pre-deposit (via authorised banks) or initial settlement is fully permitted under RBI's LRS. For SDS applicants we recommend completing your GIC through the Canadian partner bank directly, then buying a smaller cash float (C$2,000–C$3,000) from us for arrival expenses. We need your IRCC letter, GIC certificate (if relevant), valid passport and PAN.
